Nataly's Engagement Story

I met my husband to be in the fall of 2001. He was a buddy of my dad's. He was 26 and I was a tender 15 years old. I was smitten at once! Unfortunately, I have such a "youthful" appearance, that he thought I was about 8 years old. Over the next two years, his friendship with my dad grew to the point that they considered each other their closest friends. Barry came to visit every night on the weekends and I served tea and cookies and listened to the talking and laughing and rarely joined in.

That summer I celebrated my 17th birthday. I began to have the slightest glimmer of hope that he had finally noticed me beyond being the child of his best friend. My hopes were confirmed in August when he asked my dad for permission to court me!

One evening in September of 2003 when we had been "seeing" each other for less than a month, my parents took me out for dinner and a talk. They told me that they felt our relationship was progressing too quickly. If I wanted to continue in it they had decided that we would need to make a serious commitment toward marriage. I was devastated! I knew that Barry was interested in me, but was he serious enough to consider marriage to a 17 year old? That same night I nervously greeted him when he came in the house and sat down at the kitchen table. The tension seemed to be affecting him too. He refused his normal tea and cookies and opened my Bible that was lying on the table to the book of Proverbs, chapter 31. I was well familiar with the passage of the Virtuous Woman. My mother had schooled my sisters and I in the qualities of a good wife. Nervously, my dearest declared that he had found his virtuous woman. He took hold of my hands and looked into my eyes as he asked me if I would be his wife.

Three short months later I started my new life as Mrs. Barry Rinkhoff. Our three and a half years of marriage have been beautiful, peaceful, and blessed. I thank God daily for leading us firmly in the way He had planned for us!
